Custom build: software for the work nothing off the shelf fits
When no product fits how your team works, we build the missing piece, such as an onboarding tracker, an approval workflow or a reporting pipeline, and hand you the code, the documentation and the keys. It is for companies that have looked at the options and found that buying would mean bending the work to fit the tool.
Build or buy: the decision test
We earn nothing either way, so the call is honest. Building is usually right only when most of these are true:
- You have scored the off-the-shelf options against your written requirements, and none covers the work without heavy workarounds.
- The work is specific to how your business runs, not a common task every company does the same way.
- The cost of the closest product, over several years, is higher than building and running your own.
- You need to own the data and the logic, not rent them behind someone else's login.
If those are not true, buying is usually the better call, and we will say so.
Who it is for
- Teams running a core process on spreadsheets and status meetings because no tool fits.
- Companies paying for a large platform to use one small part of it.
- Operations that need a connection between systems the vendors do not offer.
What happens, step by step
- Discover. We map the work and write down what the tool must do, and what it must not.
- Select. We check the market first. Only when nothing fits do we design the build, and you approve the plan and price.
- Implement. We build it, connect it to the tools you already use, and test it against the real work.
- Adopt and hand off. We train your team and hand over everything needed to run it without us.
Who owns what
- You own the code written for your engagement, and the admin keys.
- You own the data. It lives in accounts in your name, not ours.
- You get the documentation and runbooks another developer would need to maintain it.
- Nothing sits behind our login. When we leave, your team keeps operating.
How pricing works
You know what you will pay before any work starts. These are the only points where we charge:
- The first conversation is free. A 30-minute call to see whether we can help and where to start. No obligation.
- Most engagements start with the Operations Audit. The fee is agreed in writing before work starts, based on how much of the business is in scope. A reporting dashboard can start on its own.
- Every fix is priced in writing before it begins. A longer engagement carries one monthly fee for an agreed term.
- Nothing else. No hourly meter, no surprise invoice, no vendor commissions. Everything delivered is yours to keep.
A build is priced only after Select confirms nothing off the shelf fits.

Proof
Delivered by our Founder inside a large enterprise, before Pharos Lumen: one automated pipeline from more than ten data sources replaced a third-party reporting dependency with reporting the team owns, eliminated a one-to-three-week manual collection cycle, and cut the reporting cycle by 60%. Read the case study.
From our own practice: a self-hosted AI voice pipeline replaced a commercial service, taking the monthly cost from $20 to $200 down to about $2 to $3 for the same workload. Read the case study.
Questions
When is custom software better than off the shelf?
When the work is specific to your business, no product covers it without heavy workarounds, and owning it costs less over time than renting the closest product.
Who owns the code?
You do. The code written for your engagement, the documentation and the admin keys are handed to you.
Who maintains it after you leave?
Your team, or any developer you choose. The documentation and runbooks are written for exactly that.
Will it replace the tools we already have?
Usually not. Most builds connect to the tools you already use and fill the gap between them.
